Sable Mountain Lodge is an unusual lodge set in a wooded hillside location just outside the Selous Game Reserve.

There are 4 tented bandas including 2 honeymoon suites set on raised wooden platforms in a secluded part of the camp and overlooking a beautiful wooded gorge. Then there are a further 9 stone bandas scattered over the hillside and offering wonderful views. All tented and stone bandas have en-suite facilities and private verandas.

Sable Mountain Lodge has two restaurants depending in which part of the camp you are staying, both offering excellent international cuisine and a well stocked bar area.  A natural spring water swimming pool offers a chance to relax and cool down when it gets too hot for game drives.  There is also a tree house which overlooks a watering hole and from here you can watch the animals which come to drink.  In the months of November/December you may also be lucky enough to see the rare sable antelope here.

Full and half day game drives are available in comfortable 4x4 safari vehicles and a boat safari can be included on the full day game drive if guests wish.  Also on offer are walking safaris setting off very early in the morning in order to avoid the heat.

TanzaniaAway:

Sable Mountain is somewhat distant from the remainder of the Selous, and hence a lengthy journey (although in itself a game drive) is involved if you are planning a two-centre stay in the Selous. However the cost of the latter is offset by the reasonable lodge rate. Incidentally, many guests choose to arrive by train (a fascinating 5-hour journey) from Dar, rather than flying in.

We Remember:

The secluded honeymoon suite, whose partially open air en-suite bathroom has a shower with a bench to sit on and enjoy the amazing view through the completely open side of the shower area.

Guests Comments:

We stayed for 3 nights which we feel was the perfect amount of time. We took the train and arrived in the evening for a meal. The staff were great and really friendly. Our stone banda was comfortable. The location is beautiful and the whole setting is very picturesque, especially around the top bandas.

This was my dream trip to Africa and this was a good start.

This mountain retreat simply has to be experienced... an amazing location on the edge of the Selous Game Reserve. Wonderful staff, well appointed accommodation and great food - plus access to some of the most prolific wildlife viewing you are likely to experience anywhere. Highly recommended!
